Project Need

Q: Why are these transmission lines needed between Edmonton and Calgary?

A: AESO has identified there is a critical need to upgrade the transmission infrastructure between Edmonton and Calgary to:

  • Create greater reliability for consumers in southern and central Alberta – the demand for electricity has increased and the current system has not been upgraded in more than 20 years;
  • Improve the efficiency of the transmission system; adding capacity will reduce how often the system must operate at or near its limit;
  • Avoid transmission congestion that interferes with the efficient operation of the competitive power generation market; and
  • Restore the capacity of the B.C. intertie to its design level
