Q: What criteria will ATCO Electric use to determine specific transmission line routes?
A: Route options are evaluated based on key technical, economic, environmental and land-use criteria, to:
- Minimize impacts with other land uses, especially residences, built-up areas, recreation areas, highways, oil and gas facilities, airstrips and communication facilities.
- Avoid environmentally sensitive areas such as watercourses, wet or steep areas, wildlife habitat and minimize brushing.
- Follow existing property boundaries where possible and reduce impacts to agriculture.
- Keep routes as straight as possible to reduce line length and avoid costly corners.
Q: How will I know if a proposed transmission line route is on or near my property?
A: After possible routes have been identified, ATCO Electric will send information to all landowners who have property within about 800 metres (one-half mile) of any route option. For landowners living within incorporated villages, towns or cities, we will give notice of the project through advertisements in the local newspaper.
We will also advertise and conduct open houses throughout the study area where possible routes have been identified. In addition, if your property is on or immediately adjacent to any of the preliminary routes one of our representatives will contact you to arrange a personal meeting to discuss the project.
